My kids usually have lots to do during the day so it isn't a chronic condition for them, but it does happen.
Sidewalk chalk, jumpropes, blankets on the grass. Outdoor playthings don't have to be elaborate for the kids to enjoy a good time. Emily and Edward have even enjoyed building tents using blankets and our outside chairs.
A really fun idea I picked up somewhere along the way is to give the kids a can of water and a paintbrush and let them paint the sidewalk or frontporch or driveway.
It's easy, cheap, and can give them lots of time to be creative -- while keeping the mess at a minimum.
Sometimes my inner-Monet reminds me that it's fun to join in, too...
